The first chapter is pretty introductory, but very important for that; it begins by discussing the SI system of units then dimensional analysis; one of the more important tools for a theoretical physicist. Gluon propagators for SU(2) from the lattice. Livio gives the standard party-line about string theory, but he does do one very interesting thing. But the two proposed solutions contradict each other. Galois was the one responsible for first really understanding the significance of the concept of a group, and using it to get deep insights into the structure of the solutions of polynomial equations. But in physics the answer to this question has made enormous Axel Weber, in his work, shows that the decoupling solution is the only stable one with respect a renormalization group flow. Dynin claims to have proven Witten's statement. Prove that for any compact simple global gauge group, a nontrivial quantum Yang-Mills theory exists on Minkowski time-space and has a positive mass gap. The latter part of the book deals with the important role of symmetry in modern theoretical physics, and this is a topic treated in many other places in more detail. The next ten chapters form a logical group on quantum mechanics and atomic physics. The two fringe physicists Alexander Dynin and Christoph Schiller both claim to have solved the mass gap problem posed by the Clay Institute (which offers a million US$ for a solution). Yang-Mills theory with the related question of the mass gap appears today an unsolved problem and, from a mathematical standpoint, the community did not recognized anybody to claim the prize so far. The chapter ends with 14 practice problems, for which 7 have complete and detailed solutions; the remainder having hints and solutions (true for all problems in the book). This year I've had three classes try out the problem.
